"A Brief History of My Thumb"

Lucia Perillo's adventurously nostalgic stories of her youth shed light on what is seemingly the utmost important (and often necessary) thing in a teenage to early 20-year-old's life: a sense of freedom & independence.  She tells tales of her experiences in the early 1970s and '80s, when "hitching" (also known as hitchhiking) was her and her friends' outlet for freedom. She eludes to Heraclitus (a famous Greek philosopher) a number of times throughout the story, citing this quote of his, "Just as the river I have stepped into is not the same, and is, so I am as I am not." This quote seems to me, as a reader, to be in a way symbolic of how Lucia Perillo lived her life back then and still may to this day. It was a very relatable story as I am sort in that same stage of my life. Very good, short read.

  1. Solid summary, but I want you to take it to a more analytical place. How is she achieving the effects you mention.
